Step Two:
Downloading Filezilla, an FTP client. In order to upload a website, you need some type of program that allows you to transfer the files. There are many programs available, but for this tutorial, we will be using Filezilla. From here until the end of the upload process, you must have a connection to the internet.

PC
  • Go to FileZilla: (http://filezilla-project.org/) .
  • Click on Download FileZilla Client.
  • A page will load that gives different operating systems, click on the link recommended for the operating system you use.
(For example, if you are using Windows you can choose the first link FileZilla_3.6.0.2_win32-setup.exe.)
  • You will then be prompted to run or save the download. Choose save

Step Three:

Now that you have downloaded Filezilla, it's time to install it.

PC
  • Once it has downloaded. You will choose run. (You may need to find FileZilla in your download folder if you are not prompted to run the program)
  • A pop will show up asking if you want to allow the following program to make changes from an unknown publisher.
  • Click yes.
  • The License Agreement box will popup.
  • Click I Agree.
  • You will then be given options for installation.
  • Read the options and choose how you want to save FileZilla on your computer, clicking next after each selection you make.
  • Do this until you come to the screen that prompts you to click Install.
  • Once FileZilla installs, you will click on finish and FileZilla should open.
  • A small window will prompt you to click "ok." Click ok.
  • Now Filezilla is up and running. It is time to move to step four.

Step Four:

Now that you have opened Filezilla, it is time to enter information into 3 text boxes.
The three boxes are called: host, username, and password (the port will be left blank).

  • The host will always be: web.nmsu.edu
  • The username will be your NMSU username (i.e. bochapma)
  • The password will be your NMSU password.

  • Once you have entered this information, click the blue button to the right of the text boxes that says "Quickconnect". It should take less than five seconds to connect you to the server.

**Please keep in mind that sometimes while you complete the rest of the steps that Filezilla may disconnect from the server. If in the last step you attempt to view your webpage and nothing shows up, first try reconnecting to the server and repeat the steps in viewing your webpage.

Step Five:

  • Now that you have entered the information and connected to the server it is time to locate your files in your computer using Filezilla. (Remember how we told you to make sure they are easy to find...this is why!)
  • The file will be in a box on the left hand side of the window. This can be tricky because every file in your computer will be shown.

Step Six:

  • Once you have located your file in the box on the left hand side, click on it to open the contents in the file.
  • The opened file will have several items in it, as shown below. In the box above, the file you have opened will be highlighted (the file that says "floralgarden" is in gray, displaying which file has been opened).

Step Seven:

  • Now that you have found your folder and opened it, you will need to highlight all the items from the folder. This can be done by holding the shift key on your computer, while clicking first the top item in the box ( in the example, "images") and then the bottom item in the box ("license.txt").
  • Once all the items are highlighted, click and drag them into the box directly to the right into the public_html file.
  • If you do not drop it directly into the public_html file, when you look for your website, it will show a "forbidden" page.

Step Eight:

  • Now that you have dropped your file, the upload process will begin!
  • At the bottom of the screen, will be a bar tracking your progress., most of the time the upload will be very quick (less than fifteen seconds).
  • At the bottom of the screen, there is a tab that says "successful transfers," these are what you upload and once it uploads, there will be a number in parenthesis next to the words (i.e. Successful transfers (7)) This number can change depending on your website, but will track your upload process.
  • Once this finishes, your website it now live! CONGRATULATIONS!
  • Now you simply need to check the website to be sure there are no errors.

Your web address is going to be: web.nmsu.edu/~NMSUusername For example: web.nmsu.edu/~cooperj7
